Brand lens

Balanced Family Academy (dense neighborhood)

The BFA lens: children under 5 and household income within 5 miles, regression-weighted to fill across 12 BFA campuses open 24+ months, with a hard $100K median family income floor. Green = model fill of 75% or better. Refit Sept 24, 2026 on ACS 2020–2024 after the review board.

Rings. Every figure uses straight-line rings of 1, 3 and 5 miles around the pin, the same rings the fleet medians and the lens are built on, so there is no ring selector.

Demographics. ACS 2020–2024 5-year, block groups, apportioned to each circle by the share of the block group inside it. Counts add up; medians are household-weighted approximations. Straight-line rings, not drive time.

Supply. Each state's live licensing system, checked weekly (Data checks tab): IN FSSA, TX HHSC, NC DCDEE (incl. religious-sponsored GS 110-106), VA VDOE (incl. religious-exempt), SC DSS, KY kynect (statewide since Sept 23, 2026), and Ohio Child Care Search, where every program was looked up one by one on Sept 23, 2026 and center capacity read from each center's latest state inspection report. Ohio school-based preschools and Indiana exempt school programs have no published capacity; Indiana registered ministries are counted at 88 seats each, FSSA's own statewide average of recommended capacity by square footage (64,264 seats across 732 ministries, July 2026). Seats per 100 under-5 excludes school-age-only programs and Storied Youth Brands schools (BFA and LeafSpring).

Scores. The BFA score is a weighted average of z-scores against BFA's own campuses, with the weights taken from the regression (OLS) of fill on children under 5 and median household income within 5 miles, rescaled so 0 is the median campus (about 88% full) and each 0.5 is about 5 points of fill; +0.5 or better is the strong band (about 93%+ at maturity). Z-scores are capped just beyond the fleet's own range so a ring gets no credit for being richer or denser than anything the brand has proven.

BFA lens. Performance = enrolled ÷ licensed capacity (Action for Children register, Dec 2025 extract; mostly Jul–Oct 2025 state inspection readings), co-located houses combined into campuses, 12 campuses open 24+ months. OLS on children under 5 within 5 mi and median household income within 5 mi (R² 0.50, the share of the spread in fill it explains): one standard deviation more children (4,300) is worth about 14.5 points of fill, one more of income ($26K) about 8 points. Held out by whole location the model ranks sites (r 0.56) but its fill numbers are not calibrated (Q² −0.07, which measures how well held-out predictions match), so the page shows bands, not a fill percentage. Children under 5 within 1 mile correlate more strongly (+0.74) but were not adopted: the signal is carried by the two dense campuses, moves with building size (BFA built its largest schools where children are fewest) and shifts 20–26% when the pin moves 0.15 mi. It is used for the building-size check in Territories. Floor: $100K median family income at 3 mi, hard. Every BFA grade outside Columbus is exploratory: no BFA school operates elsewhere.

BFA green line. Set Sept 21, 2026 at a model fill of 75% (enrolled ÷ licensed at maturity). Core = 83% or better; suburban = 75–83%, where Dublin and Powell score. After the Sept 24 refit: Indianapolis has about 205 sq mi of BFA green within 32 mi (158 before); Columbus 267 and Cincinnati 146 within 25 mi. At the 70% exploratory line for the secondary Ohio markets: Cleveland 83 sq mi, Dayton 13, Akron 4, Toledo 3, against 348 in Columbus and 252 in Cincinnati; Canton and Youngstown have none.

Heat map. Every ¾-mile cell in the seven states scored on the BFA lens (1/3/5-mile rings); cells with fewer than 300 children under 5 in 3 miles are blank. The greens follow model fill: 93%+, 83–93% core and 75–83% suburban; pale green = 70–75% exploratory; cream = 65–70%; pink = under 65% or under the $100K floor. Grades carry ±1: held out, a school lands within one grade of its actual grade 83–93% of the time and in the exact grade 29–50%, so treat neighboring grades as ties. Growth layers (population growth band, homes built 2020+, young-family arrivals, permits per 1,000 households of the issuing town) are context and enter no rating.

Not here. Retail anchors and elementary schools are shown for fleet schools only (no live map data on this page). Kentucky and Ohio outside the listed counties may be under-counted.

Data checks. Every Monday the provider list is compared with each state's live licensing system; results are in the Data checks tab.
